Computers

26 September @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Ray and I hope to help you find out about the new wave of cheap small single-board computers such as the Raspberry Pi (~ $60) which has a multitude of uses.
The Pi can run as a cheap substitute for a desktop or laptop computer doing things like email and browsing the internet. Alternatively  you can  attach it to all sorts of sensors around your home such as door and window switches, security alarms, temperature sensors, battery voltage sensors, security cameras and soil moisture sensors! There are literally hundreds of ideas for using it described in its own internet magazine. It has been used to help brew beer and to drive an automated toy mouse thrower to stop a cat getting bored.

With a bit of electrical wiring you can have a complete home automation system for very little outlay – accessible from anywhere in the world!

Please let us know what you would like to do.

At present the main problems that have been raised with me are 1. My laptop/computer is awfully slow or 2. Could I use a Raspberry Pi as a home computer. We might have look at number 2 on Tuesdays while number 1 could be looked at Monday or Tuesday. Don’t expect miracles!
